Patti Smith had Michael Stipe as a surprise opening act at her New York Webster corridor concert on December 26. Stipe sang "joyful Birthday" to the poet/ rock legend that celebrated her 70th birthday. The set marked Stipe's first substantial public performance in nearly four years and his debut as a solo artist.
