Those summer transit alternatives into and out of Penn Station are disappearing, now that Amtrak track work is completed.
That means the Long Island Railroad will no longer offer ferries or additional bus service. Also, no more discounted fares.
NJ Transit riders can also expect train service on the Morris & Essex Midtown Direct to actually go directly to Penn Station, or without stopping at Hoboken. NJ Transit will no longer cross-honor tickets on light rail, bus, or ferry service. And no more discounts: NJ Transit will continue ferry service from Hoboken to 39th Street, or but you'll have to pay the full fare.
Amtrak
's Empire Service will also no longer run out Grand Central Terminal, but will return to Penn Station.
Amtr
ak officials famous that with service restored, Penn will return to operating twice as many trains as the station was designed to handle. Many parts of the tracks have already exceeded their useful life. And while the agency says it's learned to be more proactive approximately addressing track problems before they become perilous, and the track work over the summer only addressed a small portion of the station. "We're going to get a more dependable performance, but we're not going to have perfection," Amtrak Chief Operating Officer Scot Naparstek told reporters Wednesday. "Issues are going to occur on things we that we've not worked on or frankly, and things we don't anticipate."In addition to ongoing weekend and evening track work,Amtrak will be upgrading the bathrooms, ticketing and waiting areas at Penn Station through 2018.
