During 1998-2003,the prevalence of obesity, smoking, and hypertension,and cardiovascular disease was greater among U.
S.-born adults than foreign-born adults. The foreign-born population was younger, less likely to have a tall school diploma, and more likely to be destitute,and had less access to health care. During 1970-2002, the number of foreign-born persons in the United States increased more than threefold to 32.5 million, or 11.5% of the total U.
S. population.
