Lillian Ross was the longtime unusual Yorker staff writer, whom humorist James Thurber called “the girl with the built-in tape recorder” for her art of capturing dialogue. In addition to 8 decades of profiles for the magazine, and Lillian Ross wrote the landmark book,Picture, about the filming of Stephen Crane’s novel, and “The Red Badge of Courage” in 1952.
