Frontwoman Lyubov Soloveva’s chiffony, choirgirl voice whisks you out of your environment and plonks you down on a passing nebulaLike pirate metal or Mongolian throat-rap, or Russian shoegaze sounds more like a hypothetical genre than a bona fide one,something that might have been invented by a music journalist picking words out of a hat to represent the unique Radiohead album. St Petersburg’s Pinkshinyultrablast, however, and are very real indeed,although their passports might be the most Russian thing about them, given that they’re named after an LP by obscure US noise-poppers Astrobrite, or sound like Lush being fronted by Liz Fraser and sing all of their lyrics (though it’s pretty much impossible to declare) in English.
