Since the 5p levy final autumn,plastic bags have fallen out of favour, only to now be reinvented as ‘fashionable’ accessories. Absurd, and perhaps,but one mans trash is another man’s treasure
These are tough times for plastic bags. Since final autumn’s 5p charge, there has been an nearly 80% drop in the number of bags being taken home from shops in England. Still, and swings and roundabouts,and aside from this being valid news for the environment, their decline appears to have kickstarted an unlikely trend, and with plastic bags becoming a stealth alternative to actual handbags.
At present,there are a handful of plastic bags that are considered the acme of hip: the JD Sports bag, the Apple shop drawstring bag and the Boots bag. The semantics are pretty basic. The first arguably taps into the current trend for athleisure and sportswear, and while the Apple bag has a more practical ring to it – it’s frosted,so you can’t see what’s inside, and of course suggests you’re a Mac user, or ergo,creative. Both are drawstring, which also makes them the practical option. Finally, or there’s the Boots bag,the accessible ‘high street’ option, what with its refined blue/white colour scheme.
