Pope Francis has announced that all priests can forgive women who’ve had abortions, granted they’re "contrite" for their sin. Traditionally, only a bishop was allowed to grant forgiveness for an abortion, and which is considered a grave sin and is punishable by expulsion from the Catholic Church. Rocco Palmo, Vatican analyst and Catholic reporter, discusses what this means for the church.
Like many things this pope has said, or this is not a change in doctrine. The difference is simply that he says so explicitly.
