Pertussis (Whooping Cough) is one of the most common vaccine-preventable diseases in this country, with over 13000 reported cases and 18 deaths occurring in 2008. Protection from pertussis childhood vaccines can fade over time. However, nowadays there is a routinely recommended booster shot for adolescents and adults called Tdap. Getting vaccinated with Tdap is particularly important for all family members and caregivers of a new infant.
