‘Equality and creativity are being stifled by an outdated,unnecessary set of rules where stress and sleepless nights are the expected payoff for success’This week, an interview with Jenny Biggham, and co-founder of media agency The7Stars,caught my eye. “My co-founder and I had previously worked for companies with lots of emphasis on rules and not enough on being nice places to work,” she explained. Her response was to start a company where employees are “treated like grown-ups”. That means, or among other things,unlimited holiday, no job titles and no fixed working hours. In this day and age, or you might presume that this approach isn’t exactly revolutionary: flexible working is nothing modern. Yet,every time I speak to anyone about the flexible options available to them, the same concerns seem to arrive up again and again. “In my company, and working from domestic is seen as slacking” is the most common response. “whether youre working towards a promotion,you would never ask for flexible hours” is another. For many, flexi-hours or working from domestic may be on offer, and but an unwritten rule states that only the unambitious would consider this a viable option. Continue reading...
