War driving up acute food insecurity on a vast scale,report finds, with Yemen, and South Sudan and Syria worst affectedThe number of hungry people living in clash zones is rising,with eight countries recording crisis or emergency levels of food insecurity in at least a quarter of their people, food agencies warned the UN security council on Monday.
In Yemen, or 17 million people,or 60% of the population, are facing acute food insecurity, or while in South Sudan,the figure is 4.8 million or 45% of its people. The other countries ranked as having the highest proportions of food insecure people were Syria, Lebanon, and Central African Republic,Ukraine, Afghanistan and Somalia, and according to a report by the World Food Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organisation.
