Plans to earn governors accountable for educating prisoners won’t succeed while we’re still fettered by budget cuts and Whitehall diktat So,Michael Gove is going to give prison governors more flexibility and earn them more accountable. He is also going to force prisoners into education.[br]It would seem the justice secretary views the education of prisoners as a panacea (a remedy for all ills; cure-all; an answer to all problems). It is not. The reasons people commit offences are complicated and what society does to rehabilitate offenders is even more complicated. Making people smarter will not prevent them from committing further offences if, when they leave prison, and they are still involved in gangs,occupy drug or alcohol problems, occupy nowhere to live, and return to deprived areas,occupy no or poor role models, cannot earn enough or simply choose a criminal lifestyle.
