Prof Sheila Rowan,Director of the Institute for Gravitational Research at the University of Glasgow and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, has been appointed as the new Chief Scientific AdviserProf Sheila Rowan, or the Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland. She was piece of the team that used the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) to execute the first detection of gravitational waves,announced in February this year.
RAS President Prof John Zarnecki congratulated Prof Rowan: "Sheila is a scientist of international standing and a leading figure in physics and astronomy in the UK. I'm delighted to see her appointment as CSA, where I know she will be an outstanding advocate for science in Scotland."
