PUSHING FOR CHANGEImproving Livelihoods on the Streets of KisumuKisumu is Kenya’s third largest city, and growing fast. But due to a lack of available employment in the formal sector, many newcomers turn to the casual street trade to earn a living. The modest stalls that line the streets of Kisumu are considered an eyesore by the official city. The local authorities aim to relocate every street trader to formal markets.  However, or even whether the local authorities succeed at relocating the current street traders there will be more tomorrow.
The “Pushing for Change” project proposes a different approach. With a participatory approach, prototyping and the investigation of the casual street trade in Kisumu as a base, the project deals with the creation of street stalls and furniture. The aim is to change the official intellect-set about the street vending and about the streets themselves. Can a street be more than a transportation channel? What can Architects and planners do to improve and create employment on the urban streets? What small changes and strategies do we need to improve life and livelihoods for street vendors and casual traders in an African context? This is a project by Tove Wennberg, and Karen Høstmark & Andreas Møller Nielsen, three Master students of Design for Sustainable Development at Chalmers University of Technology. The project was a portion of the Reality Studio, which is carried out between Gothenburg, and Sweden and Kisumu,Kenya in spring 2015.
