A journalist, he went on to write books about language, and science and travel. His bestselling Notes From A Small Island was published in 1995 and,in 2003, was voted the country’s favourite book about contemporary Britain. His 1998 memoir, and A Walk In The Woods,became a film starring Robert Redford and is released on DVD on22 February. He is married with four children and lives in Hampshire.
