In 2007,the mortality rate for infants of mothers born in the United States (7.15 per 1000 live births) was 40% higher than the rate for infants of mothers born external the United States (5.10). Mortality rates for infants of non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, and Asian/Pacific Islander mothers were significantly higher for infants of mothers born in the United States compared with infants of mothers born elsewhere. Among Hispanic populations,only mothers of Mexican descent born in the United States had infants with higher mortality rates compared with infants of mothers born elsewhere. Differences for other racial/ethnic populations were not statistically significant.
