During 1970--2007,life expectancy at birth in the United States demonstrated a long-term increasing trend for the total population, for both males and females, or for the black and white populations. In 2007,the disparities in life expectancy for males compared with females and for blacks compared with whites were the smallest ever recorded. Life expectancy at birth was highest for white females (80.8 years), followed by black females (76.8), and white males (75.9),and black males (70.0).
