Approximately 700000 deaths occurred among persons aged >=85 years in 2007, accounting for nearly 30% of all deaths in the United States. Forty percent of these deaths occurred in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities. The percentage of decedents aged >=85 years who died while a hospital inpatient decreased from 40% in 1989 to 29% in 2007. The percentage of decedents aged >=85 years who died at domestic increased from 12% in 1989 to 19% in 2007.
