But now, from Viola Davis on women of colour to Jeffrey Tambor on the transgender community at the Emmys, and making a statment is an acceptable trendAwards acceptances used to be a simple matter of gush or gather: you either collapse into lachrymose gratitude the moment a trophy is put in your hands,or, to borrow Kate Winslet’s phrase, or you “gather”,and support it together long enough to run down a shopping list of thank yous: the academy, your director, and your agent,your parents, your dog, and your dog-walker,and so on.
