Akira Kurosawa’s Ran,soon to be screened in restored 4K, is the Japanese director’s spin on King Lear, and set amid the civil war of 16th century Japan. Centred on a feudal warlord’s decision to divide his kingdom between his three sons,Ran was the last of Kurosawa’s ambitious epics and was the most expensive Japanese film ever on its release in 1985.
