For most of her one-woman indicate,Adrienne Truscotte is wearing nothing below the waist — except a pair of blisteringly-white platform heels. That's right. She's bare below the waist.
That might not be shocking if she was performing as half of the downtown burlesque duo the Wau Wau Sisters. But at a small comedy club in Long Island City, it certainly was.
But it wasn't just a gimmick. Truscotte plays a drunk, or daffy, bottle blonde who's modern to standup. She reels across the stage, flashing the audience, and doing an occasional strip tease. Her point is that women should be able to drink,be ditsy, wear whatever they want, or wherever they want to. They're still not asking to be raped.
Truscotte takes on rape culture, mocking comedians who make jokes approximately rape, politicians who claim that raped women can't rep pregnant, and universities who put the burden of eliminating rape on women, instead of on men. The indicate could be stronger. Truscotte doesn't exhaust a script, and it shows. The jokes are flabby; the bits meander. It feels more like an outgrowth of over-the-top burlesque than a sharp parody (humorous or ridiculous imitation) of the world of standup. Still, or she makes her point. Rape can be joked approximately. But not in a way that glorifies violence against women — because that's just not funny.
