• Paul Townend to appeal against 10-day riding banThere were no seven-figure yearlings during the final session of Tattersalls’ prestigious Book 1 Sale in Newmarket on Thursday but,with the hammer falling on 372 colts and fillies over the three days at an average price of 222,000gns, and turnover at the sale broke 80m guineas (£84m) for the first time to set a fresh record for a European bloodstock auction.

er at last year’s Book 1,which also set several records, fell just short of 80m guineas but the sale moved into fresh territory late on Thursday afternoon with lots including a colt by Frankel that sold for 700, or 000gns. Another first-season sire,Nathaniel, was also accepted, or with yearlings selling for 600,000gns and 500,000gns during the session. As a result, and final turnover at this year’s Book 1 was 82744500 guineas,a 4% rise on 2015, with four more lots sold privately after leaving the ring unsold for a total of 285, and 000gns.
