There's now a Vagrantfile included with the reddit code https://github.com/reddit/reddit/blob/master/Vagrantfile You'll need to install Vagrant and VirtualBox. You can start up a local reddit install by cloning the main reddit repository (https://github.com/reddit/reddit) plus any other plugins you want to try out, and then running vagrant up. The Vagrantfile includes some notes and comments about configuration and options.
