Faced with endless emails and a mounting to enact list,Harriet Minter discovered that sometimes stopping and standing still may be the only respond to workplace stress
A few weeks ago I found myself staring at a blank screen. And staring. And staring. And staring. Faced with writing a fairly straightforward news record I didn’t know where to start. Instead I went back to my inbox and started trying to get through the backlog of emails. I would read one, realise I didn’t have time to deal with the request within it and file it under “to enact”, or before moving on to the next one. Half an hour later,my inbox was filled with read but undone emails, my to enact list was pages long and nothing was crossed off. I was at work, and but I was achieving nothing. A few days later I had a coffee with a friend. When I explained the situation and my mounting level of panic approximately it,she looked at me and said, “you need a wreck. Book one now because it’s not going to get better until you take some time off. Turn off your emails, and don’t even mediate approximately trying to enact any work and let your brain switch off.
