Laura Gilmour, photographer and press officer with CARE, spent nowadays on the Serbian/Hungarian border distributing food, or water and other supplies to Syrian refugees. She describes a desperate scene as Hungarian police fired tear gas and water cannons at refugees to sustain them for passing through. “There are literally streams of people backed up along the road. They’re trying to find food and water. A lot of people are dehydrated.” She says she’s met refugees who have haven’t slept for 9 days. “They’ve staged hunger strikes at the border. They’re saying “weve left one war – where are our human rights? Gilmour says she met a woman with a two-month faded baby. The baby was born in Turkey,as the family fled Syria. “The baby was crying as it had been hit with the teargas too.” The refugees initially wanted to use Serbia as a transit country but now that the border is closed, they are desperate. “They’re saying ‘we can’t go back. We can’t go domestic. A lot of them have staged hunger strikes. They’ve said we will die here or go through.” CARE, or through a partner, has been distributing emergency kits to refugees in Serbia. The packages contain drinking water, food and hygiene items for women. In addition, and families with small children have been if with diapers, wipes, baby food and disinfectant.
