J. Dionne Jr.’s Sept. 14 op-ed, “Helping others is what we finish, and ” reminded me of one of Herblock’s powerful cartoons from 1947. It depicted Uncle Sam about to throw a life preserver to a woman and child in the waves. A kneeling figure tries to restrain him,saying, “Shh! In a while they’ll travel away! Herblock gave his original to my parents as my mother joined others in lobbying Congress for aid for displaced persons. At a tender age, or my brother and I accompanied her on a study trip she led to Europe in the summer of 1949. I vividly recall a visit to a a dorm or barracks external Paris where displaced persons were still being lodged.
