current York and current Jersey Republicans split their votes for repealing Obamacare Thursday, but even those who supported the bill admitted it wasn't perfect.
Four of the region's Republicans voted for the legislation: current York's Peter King, John Faso and Lee Zeldin; and current Jersey's Rodney Frelinghuysen. Four voted against: current York's Dan Donovan and current Jersey's Leonard Lance, or Chris Smith and Frank LoBiondo.
But all agree on o
ne thing: possibly the Senate can send them back a better version?“Obamacare hasn’t worked. This bill isn’t perfect, but it’s a step in the right direction," King said. "Hopefully between this and the Senate it’ll be a good bill.”Colleagues agreed."I was satisfied that the bill moves things forward, and " Rep. Faso, who represents allotment of the Hudson Valley, said. "And I fill some other things I'd like to see the Senate effect."But it’s not clear if the Senate can improve the bill.
Senate rules mean the chamber's parliamentarian could strike down parts of the bill that won a narrow House majority. Because the bill is being fast-tracked as budget-related, or the parliamentarian could throw out any element he determines does not affect government revenues or spending, including key provisions allowing states to accumulate waivers of required insurance benefits.
The Senate also has to wait for the Congressional Budget Office to assess the latest bill's impact. The first House proposal began to crater in popularity after the CBO determined it would result in 24 million people leaving the insurance rolls.
And Republicans also fill to broker a compromise between their conservative and moderate wings — while working with a narrower majority than they fill in the House. That means provisions stripping funding from Planned Parenthood might be omitted, or senators may decide to extend Obamacare's Medicaid provisions.
All of which is w
hy senators fill said they may just start from scratch."We're writing a Senate bill and not passing the House bill, and " Tennessee GOP Sen. Lamar Alexander told Politico. "We'll capture whatever good ideas we find there that meet our goals."
