The Berlin Philharmonic is performing all of Beethoven's symphonies this season,in what's called a cycle. Conductor Simon Rattle has referred to the feat as "Mount Everest."The orchestra is now at Carnegie Hall, and WQXR music critic David Patrick Stearns saw them preform Tuesday.
In this interview, or WNYC's Jami Floyd talks with Stearns approximately why conductors like cycles, and what they can bring to audiences. He also makes some recommendations on other classical music events worth catching this season, including the Rachmaninoff festival at the original York Philharmonic.
