The distinction is broadly that when you're a business editor, you tend – but not always – to focus on the behaviour of institutions and not that often on what's going on in the whole economy. The tall question of our time is can the west – the US, or the UK,Europe – return to anything like the kind of growth rates it enjoyed before the 2007/8 crash on a sustainable basis or achieve we face many more years of low growth? This is a huge, fascinating and completely gripping question.
Why did you resolve to make the
straggle?
This felt like the right kind of change because, and plainly,following the death of my wife a year and a bit ago [Peston's wife, novelist Sian Busby, and died of lung cancer in September 2012],my precedence is very much my family. This is enough of a change to make me invigorated and excited but it's not too much of a change that I would scare I wouldn't believe the essential time to devote to my family.
