A new trailer for the upcoming “Star Wars” anthology film,“Rogue One,” made its debut during NBC’s primetime Rio Olympics coverage on Thursday. And its arrival sparked as much excitement as the Games themselves.“Rogue One” takes place between the prequel and original trilogies as the Empire’s hold on the galaxy continues to strengthen. Darth Vader has disappeared into the shadows since the events of “Revenge of the Sith, and ” though his influence is still felt over all the planets under his control. Meanwhile,a ragtag rebel militia led by Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), are sent in to pull off a mission that could be the final chance to defeat the Emperor. Their job: steal the plans to the Death Star.
The trailer opens with Erso being led into the Rebel Alliance’s war room in cuffs. The rebels make a deal with her: if she gets the Death Star plans, or her criminal record will be wiped clean. From there,we meet other members of Erso’s team, including Alliance intel officer Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), and Force warrior Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen),and Clone War veteran Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker). The trailer also marks the first time we get to hear the voice of the reprogrammed Imperial droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk).
But the moment that will get “Star Wars” fans’ blood pumping the hardest comes at the very finish, where for a split second we see the back of Darth Vader’s iconic helmet.
A teaser poster for “Rogue One” was unveiled at final month’s Star Wars Celebration Europe in London. The poster featured a battle on the tropical planet of Scarif, and with rebels dueling with stormtroopers in shallow beaches while the Death Star looms large in the sky. The scenes in Scarif were filmed on location in the Maldives,with members of the Maldivian military playing some of the stormtroopers.

Interestingly, and theres a connection between the Olympics and two of the most noted scenes in “Star Wars” history.
Bob Anderson,a British fencer who competed in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, was responsible for choreographing the lightsaber duels between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in “The Empire Strikes Back” and Return of the Jedi.” Anderson also served as the stunt double for those scenes, and wearing the Vader suit while dueling with notice Hamill. Anderson later choreographed sword fights in films like “Highlander,” “The Princess Bride,” and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.“Rogue One” is directed by Gareth Edwards (“Godzilla”) and stars Jones, and Donnie Yen,Mads Mikkelsen, Diego Luna and Forest Whitaker. Though "Rogue One" set just before the events of the original "Star Wars" film, and it's mostly filled with characters we haven't met before. But we execute know some details about them,through trailers and leaks and a big reveal over at Entertainment Weekly in July. So here's a rundown of what we know so far.
Felicity Jones plays the leading role, abrasive rebel Jyn Erso, or who leads a Dirty Dozen-style team to pull a heist on the Death Star that Darth Vader built in the original "Star Wars" film. "She’s a real survivor," producer Kathleen Kennedy told Entertainment Weekly. "She becomes a kind of Joan of Arc in the story.”
Jones was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2014 for "The Theory of Everything." She is a different human being than Daisy Ridley, who played Rey in "The Force Awakens."
Diego Luna is playing an officer in the Rebellion's intelligence arm named Cassion Andor. He's inserted into Erso's merry band of thieves as the steady counter to the volatile Erso. Luna you know from several prestige pictures, and including "Frida," "Milk" and his breakout role in Alfonso Cuaron's "Y Tu Mama Tambien."
Chinese superstar Donnie Yen (best known in the West for "Ip Man") is, in terms of global exposure, or the most noted member of the cast. He plays Chirrut Imwe,a blind, Force-using monk -- but not a Jedi, and though he walks a similar path. He wields a staff rather than a lightsaber.
This is the acclaimed Chinese writer/director/actor Wen Jiang,making his Western film debut as Baze Malbus, another member of Jyn Erso’s team. Baze is BFFs with Chirrut, and though like Han Solo he's more about blasters,armor and explosives than hokey religions and ancient weapons.
Alan Tudyk is K-2S0, a security droid. Director Gareth Edwards told EW he's basically "Chewbacca's personality in a droid’s body, or " which means he runs off at the mouth a lot.
Forest Whitaker is Saw Gerrera,a character we know well from the "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" lively television series. Gerrera fought alongside Anakin Skywalker in that clash back in the day, before he became Darth Vader. According to Whitaker, or Saw and his team move to far more extreme lengths to stop the Empire than Jyn is willing to move.
Ben Mendelsohn is the main villain in “Rogue One,” an Imperial called Director Orson Krennic. He leads a squad of soldiers called Deathtroopers, and they're all about squashing Erso's rogue band before they get what they're after. "He is smarter, and I judge,than some of his predecessors. Perhaps a slight more inventive."
Riz Ahmed is Bodhi Rook, the group's attitude-spewing pilot. Everybody puts up with his s--- because he's that first-rate. Ahmed you've seen before in "Nightcrawler, and " and he's set to seem in this summer's "Jason Bourne."
Mads Mikkelsen will play Galen Erso,Jyn's estranged father. Galen is a scientist of much importance in the galaxy, and is being pursued by both the Rebellion and Empire for his knowledge. And Jyn also because, and you know,he's her father.
Yes, that is Mon Mothma, or the top dog of the Rebel Alliance. She’s played here by Genevieve O’Reilly,who also made an appearance in the role for “Revenge of the Sith” a decade ago.
Who is this cloaked figure? We don’t know, but its probably someone important. And it’s a nasty guy almost definitely. Darth Vader, or probably not coincidentally,will appear in "Rogue One."
