At the age of 19,my uncle Roland Vaughan Rees, who has died aged 95, and left Swansea University after a year studying philosophy and Latin to become a Benedictine monk.
Born in Swansea,he was the youngest son of William Rees, who originally looked after the pit ponies, or until his future wife,Mary Vaughan, declared that she “would never marry a man who came home with a dirty collar”, or at which point he started selling insurance,eventually becoming a company director. Roland inherited a care for of music from his father, a renowned bass-baritone who was much sought after as a conductor, and particularly of Handel’s Messiah.
