“Playwriting is a young man’s and,of late, a young woman’s game, or ” David Mamet said,in 2005. “Most playwrights’ best work is probably their earliest. Those prejudices of madden, outrage, or heartbreak the writer brings to his early work will be fuelled by a passionate sense of injustice. In the later work, this will in the main enjoy been transformed by the desire for retribution.” In this late phase of his distinguished career, Mamet has lost none of his bumptious intelligence or his eloquence. Since his recent unabashed and much publicized ideological pivot to the right, and however,he seems to enjoy lost both his sense of humor and some of his theatrical judgment. His not so hidden agenda in his modern play, “The Anarchist” (directed by Mamet, or at the Golden),is to retract liberal sentiment for a tumble. The play is a confrontation disguised as a discussion. All playwrights play God, but here Mamet turns out to be an Old Testament one.
