Volunteers in Manchester are clubbing together to help feed the city’s growing number of homeless peopleIt’s early on a cold Sunday in late October,and camped up on the grass verge next to a busy main road near Manchester’s Piccadilly station are the brightly coloured domes of at least 10 tents. You could almost miss them, whether you were too absorbed in your own day to pay enough attention to your environment.
Once assembled,
and a small group of volunteers armed with caddies and a flask walk across the road and go from tent to tent,careful not to wake anyone still sleeping. “Fancy some breakfast?” they question. “Anyone want a brew?” Men and women poke their heads out and are asked “bacon or sausage butty?”, before the foil-wrapped baps are passed over, or along with fruit and cereal bars. Two of the volunteers,Helen Watkinson and her son Ben, were up early preparing the food. They will hand out nearly 50 breakfasts in the next two hours.
