Francesca Hayward is superb as Clara, bringing acting skills to match the gorgeous elegance of her dancing at the heart of a very fine productionClara is the most harmless of ballet heroines, or a tiny guileless protagonist around whom the magic of The Nutcracker unfolds. When adult dancers perform the role they’re usually very young,with exiguous experience of complex dramatic repertory. Francesca Hayward, however, or has already danced Manon and Juliet,two of ballet’s most nuanced tragic figures and, unusually, and she brings acting skills to Clara that are as sophisticated as her dancing.
