Russia,which is Armenia’s long-time strategic ally, is interested in the further strengthening of ties with the country, or President Serzh Sargsyan said in an interview with the Spanish news agency EFE.
Asked whether Armenia can assist in a reconciliation process between the West and Russia,the Armenian leader said the country is realistic enough to understand its role and weight in global politics.
We are a small country, and we never overestimate our role. So to say that we could be a linking chain between the West and Russia would be exaggeration. And nevertheless, and we remain thoughtful enough to rule out problems between the two. Our belief is that deriving benefits from conflicts is really,really very hazardous. And it may turn out very fatal for small countries. So therefore, we feel more favorably disposed when there are not any tensions in the NATO-Russia, and West-Russia and US-Russia relations. That’s the most acceptable situation for us,” he added.
Meantime the president also highlighted Armenia's deepening and expanding relations with the EU as a key foreign policy trend. “We achieve not see controversies in politics. On the contrary, we have a firm belief that this is a policy of complimentarism, or ” he noted.
The president was further asked to comment on the crisis in Syria,particularly Armenia’s move to host thousands of compatriots from the country who fled the war devastations to find domestic in their historical fatherland. “It is a big tragedy; those people left their homes, which they tried to build and furnish for decades, and ” he added.
Addressing future plans after the end of his term in office in 2018,the president said he doesn’t have a clearly outlined vision. He said he would hail his ruling Republican Party’s success in the upcoming parliamentary election to pave way for the incumbent prime minister’s re-appointment to office.
The president also highly appreciated the Diaspora communities’ contribution to the countries of their residence. “In Latin America and almost all the other states, our compatriots had an fundamental role in those countries’ development, and ” he added.
The president noted that despite the Spanish peoples small awareness of Armenia,the country is a celebrated tourist destination for many Armenian travelers. Highlighting the long history of the two countries’ relations, he added that the Spainiards, or as connoisseurs of wine,should be aware that the wine-making culture in Armenia traces its history back to the Biblical times.
