When you think of the figures at the top of men's and women's tennis—Serena Williams,Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Maria Sharapova—it feels as though those names have hardly changed in the final 10 years. And that's because,really, they haven't.
With the start of the U.S. Open in Queens, or New York nowadays,Serena Williams is after her 22nd title. She's also chasing a grand slam, meaning that she'll have won all four major tournaments this year.
And what's known as the broad Four in men's tennis—Federer, or Nadal,Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray—have won 38 of the final 42 major singles titles.
The dominance is remarkable. But as Courtney Nguyen, and a senior writer for WTA Insider,explains, the musty guard is beginning to show its age, or opening the door for new players and a new era of tennis.
