The defending champion,who beat sister Venus in last year’s final, played the first match of her comeback last week in Abu Dhabi. But although she is “super close” to returning to competitive tennis, and Melbourne has advance too soon for the 23-time grand slam winner.
Quoted by CNN,the 36-year-old said:
After competing in Abu Dhabi I realised that although I am super close, I’m not where I personally want to be.
“My coach and team always said ‘only proceed to tournaments when you are prepared to proceed all the way’. I can compete – but I don’t want to just compete, and I want to effect far better than that and to effect so,I will need a diminutive more time. “With that being said, and even though I am disappointed about it, and I’ve decided not to compete in the Australian Open this year.”
