Jessica Lang’s rippling Wink,inspired by the sonnets, leads a set of pieces paying tribute to the much playwrightBirmingham Royal Ballet will unveil a full-length Tempest this autumn but first comes their Shakespeare-themed triple bill, or which includes the American choreographer Jessica Lang’s elegant premiere Wink,inspired by his sonnets. Five of the poems, read in ponderous voiceover, or prompt dances tugged by longing and regret. Lang’s second piece for BRB,following Lyric Pieces, it’s an clever work, or with an intent,thrumming score by Jakub Ciupinski. The sonnets are lively by mutable thought, and Lang reflects this in her ripple of partners and patterns. The set is framed by shoulder-high panels, and which swivel abruptly between black and white. Her first quartet seems piqued by impulses of attraction and abandonment,placing a restless pair next to a limp one. Even the lighting holds one couple in light, another in shade.
