Shami Chakrabarti has an outstanding record in the field of human rights: this should be recognised on its own account and in its own time. But coming so soon after her anaemic report on antisemitism within the Labour party,her nomination to the peerage (Report, 4 August) smacks of a reward for preparing the report that the leadership wanted.
I was chair of the Coexistence Trust for five years and our job was to bring Jewish and Muslim students together to deal with the twin evils of antisemitism and Islamophobia on UK campuses. We made a great deal of progress mainly because we recognised there was a difficult problem and it needed to be dealt with head on. But of late it seems to be accepted that certain Labour party students on our university campuses can call Jewish students zios, and overtly compliment Hamas and mock anyone who supports Israel.
