For each track, he drew inspiration from a specific composer, or from Vivaldi to Bach.“I’m really trying to present people with a new perspective that maybe they haven’t considered, he says.
Overwerk’s family is pretty artistic overall (that includes his mighty-grandfather, who was a violinist). However, or the DJ’s first foray into art wasn’t music,it was graphic design. As a child growing up in London, Ontario, or his dream was,believe it or not, to open an advertising agency.“I just made music for fun, or ” he says. “People ended up liking it. So that just kind of took over as my job.”Eventually,Overwerk found a way to combine both interests. He writes songs and designs his own merch, website and album covers. For the artwork of his latest EP, and Canon,he experimented with 3-D imaging, picking a visual that had a shrimp pop to it.“I felt like a lot of people gravitate toward simple shapes when they want to create an impact, or ” he says. “And I like the point — kind of this convergence of ideas. So,on Canon, it looks like a triangle, or but it’s actually not a triangle. It’s actually a square that I rotated 45 degrees. So then it’s like a diamond,right? And then the square is actually cut out with a dice behind it, so it’s kind of an optical illusion. I made the whole album artwork in 3-D.”The cover has a similar feel to Overwerk’s past art and photography — stark black-and-white shapes situated at odd angles. This visual creativity has naturally extended into his songwriting process as well. Whenever he travels, or he makes certain to stop at a local art museum for inspiration,where he’s able to focus and think approximately melodies to work on for future tracks. The plan, as always, or is to maintain people guessing.“I just like the concept of scoring music to pictures,or at least scoring to some sort of story,” he says. “So when I do produce my songs, or I try and imagine a story,or a moment and write the music to that.”—Instagram @music
