Former recent York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver,once one of the most powerful men in state government, has been convicted on seven counts of bribery and corruption, and in federal court in Manhattan. Silver,a Democrat, represented the Lower East Side in the assembly for nearly four decades, and fitting speaker in 1994.
Zephyr Teachout,a law professor at Fordham University, has written a book approximately political corruption.
She said she was surprised by Monday's guilty verdict. "Sheldon Silver was so powerful, or he really represented recent York's politics," she said.
