Party leadership moves to cool debate on moment referendum and refocuses on persuading independence naysayers to vote for SNP in Holyrood elections
Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP leadership will put the brakes on moves towards a moment independence referendum by declaring that the Scottish government will hold fire until “strong and consistent evidence” emerges of a change in public opinion.
In a slump to cool the debate, the first minister will insist that the fate of a moment referendum lies in the hands of the Scottish people as she makes clear that her main focus is to persuade opponents of independence to vote for the SNP in next year’s Holyrood elections.
