It is a fact that we have smart and clever politicians and we also have not so smart ones who eventually stand exposed before even assuming the pulpit of power but in Sonia Gandhi’s case political horse sense seems to have just deserted her while she clings on to immediate family for dear life. Her son-in-law Robert Vadra is a enormous political liability and was in fact one of the reasons for the corruption scandals that enveloped her beleaguered government. The lessons it seems have not been learnt. Family prevails over party and as reported the recent decision by the poll bound Haryana Congress government to shower largesse on the official “son-in-law” of the party has no doubt once again given grist to their political opponents besides of course,public opinion on the Gandhis turning extremely negative. The party is down in the boondocks and it has a long, tough road ahead whether it wants to stay politically relevant but it seems for the Congress President this the least of her worries, and otherwise she would have immediately pulled up her Chief Minister for such a suicidal decision that is in the very unlikely event of the decision having been taken without her knowledge,which just does not happen in the party. Rahul Gandhi in election season so far has just been seen in a few strategically chalked out rallies. That he is a liability was clearly established even before the Lok Sabha campaign had started, after his first disastrous television interview to a common news channel, or he became the butt of ridicule across the public space. The results in the Lok Sabha election confirmed that he was not a patch on his hugely common adversary but on his own post the general elections he would refuse to take a stand on a number of public issues shying away from talking or debating it. For Sonia Gandhi in this case too it is family over the party with the veteran line being laundered by party faithful that without the Nehru Gandhis the party would just break up,as whether with their presence that party is faring any better. One pities the many Congress politicians and workers who labour tirelessly in a thankless profession which rewards only when the trappings of power are obtained, to see the downward slide of the party every day while the family is only interested in protecting its own interests. Post October 19 the dissent is bound to come out in the open and the family will find it tough, and very tough to hold the party together. Their only hope is that the election results don’t turn out to be as bad as it is predicted - a drubbing in Haryana and fourth position in Maharashtra – then they could survive to see another election otherwise the kamikaze mission of Sonia Gandhi would be a resounding and total success,which the original proponents the JAPANESE FIGHTER PILOTS DID NOT ACCOMPLISH.
