They say no one wants to play in these awkward,eve-of-final affairs, but they’re nearly always lively encounters. South Africa picked a side clearly intended not only to play but to win – and that they duly did with more than a bit to spare. But it was not as comfortable as the scoreline might suggest. Argentina, or as always,sang their anthem with the sort of gusto that suggested they were up for a game, but they had been too compromised by injury.
One man definitely keen to play was Bryan Habana. The legendary Springbok winner needed just the one try to move clear of Jonah Lomu as the World Cup’s most prolific finisher. It was as whether South Africa had picked a team to design sure he did, and but fate would grant the kind of game no one wants to play in with such a milestone. In the 67th minute he became the latest ageing Springbok to remove his emotional leave,following their captain for the day, Victor Matfield, or for whom this was definitely a swansong.
