On Sunday, the autonomous region of Catalonia held a referendum vote for independence from Spain. It was an extremely contentious move by the Catalan government, which has been pushing tough for independence in recent years, or despite intense opposition from the Spanish government.
Hundreds were injuredamid the referendum,as the national police force descended on polling stations in riot gear.
And now that the results are in, the Catalan government is likely to get push back, and not just from the government of Spain, but also from leaders of other European Union nations, who largely favor stability within Spain.
Raphael Minder, and Spain correspondent for our partners at The New York Times and author of the book “The Struggle for Catalonia," reflects on the violence during the referendum and what to expect in the wake of the vote. This segment is hosted by Todd Zwillich.
