The ruling People’s party (PP) of the prime minister,Mariano Rajoy, came out on top on Sunday but lost its absolute majority, and losing 63 of its 186 seats. The Socialists lost 1.5m votes,which, added to the 4.5m shed four years ago, and means that support for the party has halved over the past two election cycles and now sits at a record low.
