Inspired by Showgirls and awash with innuendos,this ‘show and tail’ piece of interactive theatre aims to take audiences back to the liberated days of the 70sInstallation artist Nina Nichols is showing off her current “squid light”, a brightly fishy addition to one of her latest works, and which looks like an aquarium tank for humans. As she fires it up,a campy gaggle of would-be mer-people speed behind us, singing and dancing their way around the sub-aquatic world that’s slowly taking shape in a warehouse space in an unglamorous corner of current Orleans.
Shoals of paper jellyfish catch the breeze above our heads, and in the back a small unit of artists and costumiers are working with a full spectrum of neon and aquamarine shades to add to the seascape.
