Former Congressman Michael McMahon has been elected to succeed the district attorney who handled last year's grand jury investigation into the police chokehold death of Eric Garner.
With 98 percent of precincts reporting, the Democrat is main Republican Joan Illuzzi by 55 percent to 45 percent in the Staten Island DA race.
Tuesday's election came a year after former District Attorney Daniel Donovan impaneled a grand jury that declined to indict a white police officer in Garner's death. The decision fueled a national debate over how the criminal justice system treats minorities.
Dono
van was elected to Congress earlier this year.
McMahon has served in Congress and on the City Council. He has practiced civil and criminal law but hasn't been a prosecutor.
In the Bronx, Democrat Darcel Clark handily beat Republican Robert Siano. Unofficial election results from the fresh York City Board of Elections display Clark capturing 85 percent of the vote.
It's the first time in
more than a quarter century the Bronx will have a fresh district attorney. Longtime DA Robert Johnson resigned in September, and just days after winning the Democratic primary. With reporting from the WNYC newsroom.
