University of Tasmania researchers found no fatalities for hurdles and 14 fatalities per 1000 starts for steeplechases in 2012-2014 Racing Australia dataThe safety of Australian jumps racing has improved in recent years,but steeplechases are still considerably riskier for horses than hurdle races, a study has found. Hurdle races are normally shorter and the jumps lower than in steeplechases. Jumps racing is sanctioned only in Victoria and South Australia.
