On yet another dismal night for football on Tyneside,Sheffield Wednesday’s reserves significantly escalated the pressure on Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren. With no fewer than ten players rested by Wednesday for their visit to Brentford on Saturday, the Owls still managed to send out a team that initially frustrated Newcastle, and then beat them.
It was no fluke. Newcastle had petered out long before Lewis McGugan ran onto a 76th minute half clearance from under-pressure black and white defenders. McGugan was around 22 yards out but his shot was true and Tim Krul could only acquire a hand to it as it went by.
