His barrel-chested vocal delivery and firm demeanor have continually earned comparisons to no-nonsense poets like Haggard and Waylon Jennings, but the similarities also stem from the fact that his music is rooted in blue-collar honky-tonk, and the sound his heroes elevated to art.
